Summer evening Musings on my deck
It is Sunday evening, I am sitting on my deck and it's late afternoon. The sun is warm, but not burning, the air is still but its not stifling.
I do find these moments of peace. Guests are all checked out and more are arriving tomorrow. I am determined to not do 'housekeeping' and to try to enjoy this beautiful summer evening, taking a minute to write these musings.
Children are giggling on the beach, I can hear them and it's a delight. There are a few people, chatting far in the background and there is a feeling of peace in the air, or is it just Sunday quiet?
There are eagles above, squaking, and a family of quails running around just below the deck. This is a pleasure actually, as then I had dogs and cats, I didn't get that luxury. They kept their distance. Now the pets all passed from ripe old ages, I can enjoy their company.
I love to meet and have chats with guests, who on occasion take the time to converse. Im fascinated by peoples lives and their journey to this sweet island. What a luxury to not leave your house, sometimes for a few days, yet people from all over the world come tor rest their heads on my pillows and enjoy my home.
Salt Spring is such a unique place. I moved here from London, England over 26 years ago. That was courageous and crazy at the time, yet, this island is full of likeminded people that did the same thing. A visit, a love affair with the island and then somewhere along the way, a move to this life from all over the world. Literally.
My story is simply not unique now. 26 years ago, I was I think, a trailblazer. My family in the UK thought I was mad. Who leaves London? As the saying goes, 'if you are tired of London, you are tired of life'....I beg to differ. I would say, my life opened up, in ways I could never imagine. A different life, not a life for everyone for sure, but in this life, I have found profound peace (most of the time), calm joy, and community . Exactly what my soul was searching for. Plus a great place to raise my children, which I did alone, a place I healed and became a healer as a result. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger or gives you something to share!! There's always a silver lining!
I never felt English enough to be English (half Greek and half British by design) nor Cypriot enough to be Greek. Yet somehow, here on this little island in Canada I felt home, I felt accepted and I felt I could be me, without letting anyone down. This may resonate, but likely not if you don't have mixed heritage of any kind.
I used to live for my holidays in Cyprus, which in all honesty I do miss sometimes. Mostly for the food...dont judge me. However, as I sit here on my deck, thinking about my evening swim, I realize that instead of waiting all year for a few weeks in Cyprus, I get to live next to the beach and swim every evening, almost, from late May till mid September, and somehow I feel like I won the lottery.
Having a B&B, was a way to stay here on Salt Spring, and afford the luxury of the life I have. Offering my gorgeous sessions in my Studio doing my 'proper job' as a Holistic Beauty Therapist, is icing on the cake. Sometimes, I don't leave my home for days… and I love it. It feels guilty to love it so much. However, I also love my community and when I do go out, it's wonderful to see friendly, warm faces. Children that became adults, elders that were young 26 years ago. Tourists, looking lost. Hugs...always hugs. How long does it take to pick up a pint of milk? A while....lots of hugs along the way. I won't lie, I love to see the world too, and travel is a heart opener, helps me connect to the world and opens up my eyes energetically. I have lived in quite a few countries, till I landed here, so I do have a good lense to compare this life too. This is a beautiful world, but I love this little bit of it, a lot.
I am going to go for my swim now. My grandchildren are not coming today....but I get to swim and close my eyes into the sunset and count those blessings. As we all know, we just don't know, how many summer nights like this we have.
On that note....I send you my blessings and if you are tempted to come to this beautiful Island, and stay with me, I promise a warm welcome and happy to have a cup to tea and talk about life.....
Warmly,
Lisa x
