What's in the garden in September to eat on Salt Spring Island?
Hello guests and future snackers.....:)
I have a fabulous grape vine that I share with guests....
So If you fancy a snack...go on and pick a bunch. Want to know why they are so wonderful?
Grapes are ancient, thousands of years old. They are actually botanical berries...did you know that? I didn't! They get their colour from polyphenols, that are a natural plant compound including anthocyanin and resveratrol, which have antioxidant qualities...to keep you healthy.
Grapes have heart healthy potential. High in potassium and diets rich in fruit are associated with cardiovascular benefits.
They also contain compounds (polyphenols) that are being researched for their possible effects on inflammation, blood vessels and cognitive health. Yes....your memory!
The skin is where most of the goodness is, lots of the fibre and beneficial compounds.
There are literally thousands of grape varieties. All through history, wine making has been a part of life and celebratory rituals!
Did you know that grapevines can live for decades? Some for over 100 years!!
Vitamin K, Vitamin C, copper, potassium, water and natural carbohydrates too.
Unfortunately grapes can be dangerous for dogs and are toxic to them so never give them to your pup.
Grapevine's are symbols of abundance, fertility, celebration and connection. This little fruit is not only delicious but fortuitous in all the areas we cherish.
So come and eat some grapes.....be my guest!! They really are my favourite seasonal snack and I share them with love.
Warmly
